Little Ones and Big Ones |
Written by Chris |
This week we had both little ones and big ones come to the site to enjoy the new community playground. The first little one, pictured above, put on his gloves quickly and got to work moving cardboard, filling wheelbarrows and pushing tonka trucks. The big ones, pictured below, spanned the gamut from creating amazing artwork to filling wheelbarrows of mulch like there was no tomorrow. One volunteer taught me the "quick method" to filling a wheelbarrow by tipping it on its side for the "first 2/3rds" then to "tip it up and fill it up" for the last bit. I love how each person can come to the site and interact in their own way, both claiming and reinventing age-old work in our modern surroundings.
We were also entertained by Roses in Amsterdam who enjoyed the baking in sun while strumming his guitar and pumping us up with good vibes. Brett Ramsey, the one-mand band behind Roses in Amsterdam moved back to San Francisco recently after playing a year-long gig on a cruise ship. He was looking make some friends and had no problem doing that at the farm as we all introduced ourselves and got to know each other a bit more. Part of our work isn't just the cultivation of soil and plants, but the cultivation of community. We believe that people are at the heart of any amazing neighborhood and connecting our volunteers together helps everyone live a more connected and enjoyable life.
