Spring Forward!

Spring forward!  The day started off earlier than usual, on Sunday at 11:30am Antonio hosted a Seed Saving Workshop. For the lucky urban farmers who remembered to change their clocks last night, the workshop covered basic seed saving skills, techniques, and philosophies. Antonio shared his experiences saving heirloom fruits and vegetables suited to the unique San Francisco climate (and micro-climates).

Another amazing Work Party got started right after that, with a volunteer crew filling in the irrigation trenches we previously installed to bring water to our baby fruit trees and newly planted greens, onions and chayotes.  The weather was amazing, and as Timmy Mezzy performed on the top of the hill, additional volunteers continued the work of building soil on all of the the slopes and banks of the old Central Freeway off-ramp.  Volunteers also completed a hefty ivy-clearing project to beautify the front gates, so we can plant spring flowers at the entrance.

This will hopefully bring community attention to our project and also alert the birds and the bees that we have thirsty plants that need pollinating. First-timers took part in a quick Volunteer Orientation at the start of the day, followed by Welcome to Hayes Valley Farm Tours led by farm staff. The newcomers were encouraged to help with the visioning process of the site.  So many great ideas come up on these tours, including new workshops people want to attend, where to find a resource we need, and other ideas for support.
Please join us at an upcoming Work Party, Thursdays from 2:30pm to 6:30pm and Sundays from 12:30pm to 4:30pm.

Volunteer Appreciation Day!
Next Sunday, March 21st, we will be having a big celebration for all of the the volunteers, neighbors, and friends who have helped transform the lot into Hayes Valley Farm in just a few weeks.

Support Hayes Valley Farm!  All of the urban farmers volunteering at Hayes Valley Farm can attest, we need more tools!  Some of the most needed items on our Wishlist include wheel barrows, stiff rakes, pitch forks, loppers, and pruners. Thanks to our partnership with SF Parks & Trust, you can support our project through secure online donations at the Hayes Valley Farm Donor page.
