Hayes Valley Farm Celebrates Interdependence Day with Picnic, Cob Bench Making & More

Hayes Valley Farm volunteers and friends celebrated July Fourth with an Interdependence Day picnic and work party.
Artist Leah Rosenberg made an amazing farm cake, inspired by the lasagna mulch techniques at the farm. Each of the seven layers is colored with a different kind of vegetable juice. The cake is geographically accurate, with two marzipan cardboard bundles in the southwest corner of the farm.
Erin Wilson from Pocket Seed Library made a gingham flag to herald in the picnic spirit. Jason Hillerand Nolan O'Brien checked out hot climate seeds to try their luck in their Tenderloin and Mission microclimates.
Margaretha Haugwout did 12 second interviews with people about neighborhood, interdependence, and freedom.
Janelle, Davin, Vanessa, Patrick and others mixed together ground cement, clay, straw, and water to begin the first moist layer of a cob bench.

SISTER CITY CELEBRATION IN MINNEAPOLIS
Chacha Sikes in the Drupal Open Garden Project participated in the Interdependence Day celebrations from Minneapolis, by posing a question: "Are these seedpods done yet?" Help Chach out with a response!
