Our classes and courses are some of the most accessible and least expensive available. We do this by keeping our expenses very low. There is no lodging or on-site camping facilities, meals are pot-luck style and nearby coffeeshops welcome our volunteers and students during breaks.

Choose between half-tuition and full-tuition work trade exchanges. All work trade is at a 1:1 rate, hours in classroom to hours of work trade. For example, full-tuition for a three hour class is three hours of work trade.

"No one will be turned away for lack of funds, only lack of passion."

We accept payment plan arrangements to accomodate your financial situation and we offer exchanges for tuition through a variety of work trade tasks, including those listed below. Many of these directly benefit the communities of San Francisco, we feel this is a good example of the Fair Share permaculture ethic.

We kindly ask that work trade hours are completed before completion of any class or course.

Volunteer Day Opening & Closing: This task is by sign-up every Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm. It involves arriving 30 minutes early and staying 30 minutes after the Volunteer Days at Hayes Valley Farm to help with the setup and breakdown. Contact: Jay Rosenberg

Soil Builders: This task involves helping source materials for our various compost methods, including regular flipping and sifting of compost. Contact: Jay Rosenberg

Classroom Assistant: This task involves arriving 30 minutes early and leaving 30 minutes after classes adjourn to help with the setup and breakdown of the classroom furniture and other facilities and materials. Contact: Jay Rosenberg

Neighborhood Garden Projects: Persons doing this task will need to be able to get mulch and/or cardboard to a project site. Bay View Greewaste provides a source for free mulch. Cardboard seems to be all around us. We will use the materials to sheet mulch and then build gardens. Contact: Jay Rosenberg

Urban Permaculture in San Francisco Promotion: If you know of a special event that you think would be good to promote our classes, you can attend or table at that event, pass out flyers and talk about your experience in the classes. Help us fill future classes and spread the word of permaculture. Contact: David Cody, Kevin Bayuk, or Jay Rosenberg

Tool Search: Regularly search Craigslist and Freecycle for free tools (shovels, pruning shears, wheel barrows, etc.) and other materials like irrigation supplies, etc. for donation to 18th and Rhode Island, Hayes Valley Farm or other projects.  This could also include creating a flyer and going door to door to solicit tool donations. Contact: Kevin Bayuk

Documentation: Completing high-quality, investigative blog posts on www.permaculture-sf.org and www.hayesvalleyfarm.com. Photo and video documenting of class sessions will be considered for work trade. Contact: Kevin Bayuk

Materials Conveyance: A number of the of the permaculture projects in San Francisco are in need of certain material supplies that require a truck for conveyance.  Whether its your truck, that of a friend, or City Car Share, if you are interested in making pick ups and deliveries of certain resources (mulch, compost, sand, clay, rock dust) this will be accepted as work trade. Contact: Kevin Bayuk

Project Volunteering: Certain permaculture projects in San Francisco require support. Currently accounting, volunteer coordinatiion and certain hands-on volunteer work are requested. Contact: Kevin Bayuk
