The times are calling for debt. Major debt. Be a good citizen and oblige. Firstly, for your own education and, secondly, for the community. We've got a brand spanking new seed library on site at Hayes Valley Farm and we want you to borrow as much as you can.
Sounds great, but what IS a seed library? Good question.
A seed library is a place from which you may borrow seeds. Tomato seeds, beet seeds, cabbage seeds – you name it! Transition SF started the seed library in San Francisco with two branches currently operating: Hayes Valley Farm and Potrero Hill Public Library.
Just like a traditional book library, you can search the catalog online to see what's available, find general information about the seeds and see which plants will do well in your neighborhood. Plant the seeds of your choice in your garden, a little pot or whatever you have at home. When your crop grows, bring back seeds from the healthiest plant to the seed library.
In addition to a wealth of seeds to choose from, the true community component of the seed library is sharing what you've learned about the best conditions for growth. Not everything's going to work with the fog in the Sunset; likewise, the Mission may have too much sun for some varieties to withstand. A little experimentation is a vital part of any kind of growth, but the planting calendar has you covered on the basics of what seeds to plant at this time of year.
Come on down to your favorite haven 'tween the freeways, duck into the little house you've been wondering about, peruse the collection and get yourself into some dirty green debt!

I dont think you should encourage people to go into debt just for the experience. haha. I think the big credit banks have enough of our money.
