The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake damaged what was once the Central Freeway running through the city. Remnants of the freeway remained until 2003, when the last of the double-decker structures came down. Ground-level traffic arteries, including Octavia Boulevard, replaced elevated freeway ramps. Hayes Valley Farm's greenhouse sits on what was once Exit Zero.
