Wednesday on the farm is a day to look forward to each week. Besides being hump day, and besides being our "agenda-free" volunteer day, Wednesday is the day we share our amazing bounty with the local organization, Project Open Hand!
What this means for me is an early start onsite. Most weeks I'm there, harvesting, by 8 AM, and I continue for a few hours until the gates are open to volunteers. It's a great way to start the day: fresh air, sunshine, beautiful plants, and of course, service to my community! Lately our crops have been more abundant than ever. As exciting as this is, it's a lot for one girl to handle in a single morning. Normally I can fill 4 produce boxes of fresh greens in a morning, but the farm has shown me that there is even more available; it just isn't getting harvested!
This might be where you come in. If you're looking to take an extra step in your involvement with Hayes Valley Farm, or if you'd like to learn about harvesting, now is a great chance to join the weekly harvest. (This Wednesday, March 14, at 12PM ???), I will give a workshop and introduction to the harvest. We will discuss the crops we grow, how to harvest them sustainably, where they go, and logistics of the new harvest team. See you there!
