Honey Harvesting

A hands-on class about harvesting honey from urban hives

When:
Saturday, September 11 - 11:00 am to 1:00 pm

Description: In this class we will discuss and demonstrate three (3) methods for extracting honey from the hive depending on the type of foundation used and equipment available to the beekeeper. We will discuss how much honey you can take from a SF honey bee colony, methods for removing bees from the hive boxes or frames where the honey bee colony stores its "excess" honey and, importantly, how to keep things safe and clean during the entire process of getting honey out of the comb through bottling of the extracted honey. We will be extracting St Mary's Park/Alemany Farm honey produced by SF Bee-Cause and Friends of Alemany Farm hives. Be prepared to get a bit sticky!

Class size limited; pre-registration with payment required

Location: Off-site, specific address in SF (convenient to BART and Muni) will be provided after you register.

Instructor:
Karen Peteros

Cost and Considerations:
$20-40 sliding scale.
