Experiential Foodways Education Series: The Whole Bean

Introducing the first dinner in a series of experiential foodways education located on the old freeway turned farm


A 3 part lecture, cooking demonstration, and dinner exploring the food, art, science, and history of beans from a whole systems perspective: from past to present, and from plate to mind

Thursday, October 14 - 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm


Description:
The evening will open with an artist talk from Mark Andrew Gravel, exploring the implications of beans within the aesthetics of contemporary food systems. He will then prepare beans during the proceeding talks.

Ethnographics of beans will be presented by Alex Lampert, tracing the fundamental crop from its historical cultivation and consumption as it travels to the current dinner plate.

Aimee Hill will delve into biochemistry of beans, explaining how beans interact once they leave the plate and enter the body and how they function within local soil systems.

After lecture, dinner will be served over open dialogue, featuring Rancho Gordo Midnight Black Beans with rice and Hayes Valley Farm vegetables.

The event starts in the early evening, continuing through sunset, and concluding with dinner under the stars

Biography: Mark Andrew Gravel is a conceptual artist working with urban and agrarian foodways. Through bean-based temporary restaurant happenings and media projects, his work moves fluidly between social sculpture, relational aesthetics, urban intervention and cultural production and seeks to transform social spaces as a means to engage society with the sensual, emotional, moral and economic values of eating.


Cost and Considerations: The cost of admission for the evening is $25, including lecture, dinner and discussion,
