HONEY BEEKEEPING ESSENTIALS, THE SERIES.
Langstroth Hive Equipment Assembly
In this hands-on class, you will learn how to properly assemble hive boxes and frames to be used in a Langstroth hive at Hayes Valley Farm. By assembling this equipment, the beekeeper can save lots of money, and gain a greater appreciation of “bee space.” We will assemble three sizes of Langstroth boxes: deep, medium and shallow.
We will assemble wooden frames for these boxes, and prepare the frames for the bees’ use with wedged top bars (as is used in top bar hives), with the various types of wax foundation available on the market (wired, unwired) using no additional support and using pins and cross-wiring for additional support, and using wood strips and wax strips in lieu of foundation to guide the bees in building their own wax cells from scratch.
If you have your own hive boxes and frames to assemble, you can work on your own equipment but be sure to bring all items you will need including nails, glue and hammer.
If you think you might be interested in making your own top bar hive, we will have one, fully assembled, available for your inspection.
