Come in your best cardboard attire, bring food, stay after for the picnic/bar-b-que/potluck, meet fun and peculiar people, and vie for a chance to win a legendary cardboard sword. Also, meet the King and Queen of the cardboard realms, see cardboard dragons, and take a look around the fantastic urban farm project that is the Hayes Valley Farm.

Honey Bees are at the Farm
Written by Karen Peteros
Tuesday, 01 June 2010 00:00

If you’ve been to the Farm during this past month, you know that things are buzzing in yet one more way.  We now have hives of honey bees on site!  Earlier last month month, Chris Burley added a green hive to the site, and San Francisco Bee-Cause (SFBC) moved the first two of six colorful hives to the site.  SFBC is a new non-profit (http://www.sfbeecause.org), a Farm partner, and will be offering bee and beekeeping related workshops and classes at the Farm.  The first workshop "Intro to Beekeeping" will be on Sunday, June 6.

"Everything is a lesson in everything we do."
-- Geoff Lawton, Permaculture Research Institute of Australia, February 22, 2010

In the first four months at Hayes Valley Farm, we've held a number of workshops, including Backyard Orchard Culture, Seed Starting and Potato Tower Construction (and ongoing lessons in soil building, sheet mulching and fava planting).

We've also had a few workshop series, Vegetable Focuses, Photography & Social Media, and Kitchen Gardening. And we've also held one of our first classes, a Permaculture Bootcamp.

Alongside the growth of the fava beans and clover on the hillside berms, and the fruit trees and veggies in the Freeway Food Forest, our education program continues to grow as well...

Photo Adventures on the Farm
Written by Jay Rosenberg
Saturday, 29 May 2010 20:50

The Photo Adventure Club formed in May, out of the first of the Photography and Social Media Workshops held by Zoey Kroll.

Photo enthusiasts, fun-lovers with camera phones and volunteers of all ages (including some amazing photographers, Giovanni and Enzo, both four years old) gathered to take pictures in and around the "2.2 acre outdoor photo studio."

Photo adventures each had a theme such as "Mother's Day Portraits", "Streets of Hayes Valley" and "Renaissance of Hayes Valley."

This Sunday's theme is "Portraits of City Farmers" so get out there. If you haven't made it over yet, now is the time.

Hayes Valley Farm Is Where The Magic Happens
Written by Casey Gold
Wednesday, 26 May 2010 00:00

On Monday May 17th, Bush Baker Preschool visited the farm to kick off Magic Mondays. To give you a little background, our Magic Monday program is a day reserved for groups at the farm. We ask for a minimum of 5 kids in the same age group to run a 2-hour program. Our biggest audiences of interest thus far have been schools, although any youth group regardless of affiliation is certainly welcome.

Eight students and three adult allies from Bush Baker Preschool arrived by public transit around 10am. Three of us garden educators greeted the group with smiles bright enough to ward off the rain clouds, at least for the first hour of program.  We led a welcome circle and run through of HVF rules manifested through the acronym LAUGH- Life (Respect it), Always Ask, Use Tools Carefully, Give, Have Fun. On to a composting activity involving: a fishtank used as compost receptacle, 1-liter recycled water bottles used as scoopers, 8 curious minds and 16 explorative hands to gather and assemble the compost pile. We taught the exercise in food terms- to forage the ingredients of the “cake,” pour in rough measurements of each, mix together, and let sit bake until warm and ready.
